My Therapeutic Approach

General Therapeutic Approach

A defining feature of my approach to therapy is the belief in the power of relationships. It is my goal to build a positive, trusting professional relationship with you. You will feel accepted and supported no matter what you bring to the table. You will feel seen and heard as we develop a plan to help you overcome difficulties, heal and grow. My approach can be considered eclectic in that I believe not one size fits all. Together, as I look through the lens of my training and your needs, we will consider the approach we feel will be most beneficial to you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This is an effective method that aides in better management of stressful life situations. We will focus on challenging and changing thought patterns and their associated behaviors to improve your emotional experience, develop skills to help you cope and target personal problems. It is effective to treat many mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, phobias, sleep disorders and more. This approach generally takes fewer sessions and is done in a structured manner.

Christian Counseling

As a person of faith you might be interested in Christian counseling. As a Licensed Professional and Christian I find that this approach is quite dynamic. We can incorporate the tenents of the faith that are important to you to help you find meaning in your life. You can gain relief from mental health struggles, specific life stressors, interpersonal struggles and communication difficulties. It is a holistic approach enabling you to discover how all parts of your life are connected creating great opportunity to grow in your faith. If your Christian beliefs are important to you, let me know. We will incorporate them into your work in therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

EMDR is an evidenced-based mental health technique that uses eye movement and guided instructions to help you heal from trauma and other distressing experiences. It is different from other therapies in that it does not require you to speak in detail about difficult issues. It focuses on changing thoughts, emotions and/or behaviors. This therapy allows your brain to resume it's natural healing process helping repair mental injury from painful memories and experiences. I am EMDR certified and maintain this qualification by ongoing course work, supervision and consultation. For more information click the EMDRIA link below or contact me.

Additional Approaches

Other areas of training include but are not limited to: Motivational Interviewing – A practical and empathic approach to resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities. It acknowledges how difficult it is to make life changes. Internal Family Systems – helps protective and wounded inner parts. It is a way of understanding yourself, as well as the dynamics in your personal relationships. This allows you to live life with confidence, clarity, and connectedness. Emotionally Focused Therapy – Here we develop more secure emotional bonds resulting in stronger relationships. By addressing underlying emotions, couples become more responsive to each other’s needs creating greater connection and intimacy.
